Most Common Questions

Truck Compatibility

What size flatbed do I need?

On our flatbed models, our X14 requires an 84” CA with an 11’ flatbed, while our X12, Denali 3S, Denali 3SC & Denali 1S can be built for a 60” CA with a 9’ flatbed, but we do recommend the 84” CA with 11’ flatbed if you are planning to tow.

Can I use a pickup bed instead of a flatbed?

Some models are designed specifically for flatbed trucks, while others are available as traditional slide-in campers. Contact us to discuss the best option for your needs.

Do I need dual rear wheels?

While the dual rear wheels will help you feel more stable, they are not necessary to run any of our campers.

What truck do I need?

Truck requirements vary by model. Our larger flatbed models are designed for Class 5 trucks (5500), with a recommended 84” cab to axle, but can build some of our flatbed models for a 60” cab to axle. We do have slide-in models that fit in 3500 trucks with our newest Granite 8 fitting in a 2500 (depending on the truck). We can help determine the proper truck configuration based on the camper you select.

Will my current truck carry one of your campers?

You can check your compatibility by reviewing your truck's year, make, model, GVWR, wheelbase, and payload capacity.

Do I need to have upfitting done on my truck?

The short answer is no. Uplifting your truck is not necessary to run one of our campers. Some of our customers like to upgrade the suspension systems on their trucks, especially the 5500 trucks, to help the ride be smoother when the camper is not on the truck.

Weight & Payload

Does adding lithium batteries increase weight significantly?

Not as much as you may think. Lithium batteries typically provide substantially more usable power and typically weigh anywhere from 60+ lbs per battery

How much cargo can I carry?

Cargo capacity depends on your truck's payload rating and the final weight of your camper.

How much do your campers weigh?

Weights vary by model and options selected. We provide detailed weight estimates during the ordering process so you can properly match your camper to your truck.

What solar options are available?

Our X14 & X12 models include large solar packages as standard equipment, with additional upgrades available for customers seeking maximum off-grid capability. And our Denali series and slide-in models offer solar packages as options.

What battery systems do you use?

We utilize premium lithium battery systems paired with Victron energy components to provide reliable power management and monitoring.

Can I run air conditioning off batteries?

Depending on the model, battery bank size, inverter capacity, weather conditions, and air conditioner usage, battery-powered air conditioning operation is possible.

How long can I camp off-grid?

Our campers are designed for extended off-grid camping. Actual duration depends on weather, power usage, water consumption, and your selected battery and solar package.

Off-Grid & Power Systems

What heating systems do you offer?

We offer premium heating solutions including diesel-powered hydronic heating systems and traditional RV heating systems depending on the model and customer preference.

Can I camp below freezing temperatures?

Yes. Our campers are designed with four-season systems that help protect water and holding tank systems during cold-weather use.

How large are the fresh water and holding tanks?

Tank capacities vary by model. Specific capacities are listed on each model page, with our largest tank capacities being in our flatbed models.

Why do you use wood framing in certain areas instead of aluminum?

Wood provides excellent strength, thermal performance, and flexibility in areas where movement and stress occur, particularly around slide openings and structural transitions. We have videos on our YouTube channel explaining our building process in more detail.

Why choose a truck camper over a travel trailer?

Truck campers offer greater mobility, easier access to remote destinations, and the ability to tow additional trailers, boats, or utility trailers.

Why choose Rugged Mountain RV?

Why are your campers more expensive than mass-produced campers?

Our campers are built in lower volumes using premium materials, advanced electrical systems, four-season construction techniques, and extensive craftsmanship that are difficult to achieve in mass-production environments. Our goal is always quality driven.
